English language proficiency requirements Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the with lower levels of language proficiency. Native or near-native speakers of the language should contact the Modern Languages department for proper placement.The department reserves the right to place students in the course most appropriate to their abilities. |

This is a comprehensive introductory course in the Japanese language for beginners to gain beginning-level communicative competency and to form a solid foundation for further studies. Four skills in Japanese will be practiced: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Designed for students who have little or no knowledge of Japanese, this course offers students an introduction to Japanese language and culture through a study tour of Japan. It includes in-class lectures and a 2- to 3-week study tour experience. Field journal notes and a term paper will be assigned.

Students will develop the skills to use Japanese in both social and workplace situations.
